Roger William Penn has been in the restaurant business for more than 40 years, beginning his career with a small gas station and drive-in restaurant in Canton in 1967. At that time, Penn’s restaurant featured only catfish filets and chicken nuggets, but the small eatery quickly gained popularity. Capitalizing on the need for a family restaurant in Canton, Penn expanded his business into a full-service restaurant. That decision laid the foundation for his current restaurants.

That first Penn’s restaurant opened with a capacity of about 200 people in Canton. Today Penn’s Restaurants, known for their great seafood and chicken, has become a staple for many Mississippians. In addition, the restaurant’s famous chicken-on-a-stick and catfish filets have become a tradition at most fairs throughout the region. Now there are many more company owned and franchise locations throughout the South.
In addition to his successful restaurants, Penn also operates one of the largest on-site catering operations in the country. Penn’s has catered many events throughout the southern region.
With the restaurants and catering service established, Penn has turned his attention to franchising. His future plans include the creation of a national chain of restaurants, but for now he is focusing on establishing additional franchises in the South. Penn believes that slow and careful growth will give the restaurant a better opportunity to eventually expand nationally.
Penn’s believes his proven concept within the quick-serve segment is an area primed for explosive growth in the coming years. All of Penn’s products are made form scratch using the freshest catfish, chicken and seafood available and breading mixes formulated from traditional family recipes.
